This Icosa Dome "VB2" (vertical base type 2) is sized for using 10
and 8 ft lumber with minimal waste.
Bottom 15 struts are all almost 10 ft while top 10 struts are almost 8
ft.
Geometric diameter, across opposite vertices (not at ground level) is
17' - 9"
Small picnic table shown is 6 ft long for reference to aid in
visualizing proportions of this 2 x 4 frame.
Floor area is 160 sq. ft. Without door is 172 sq. ft.
Height: 12' - 5"
Height of the lower triangles and door area is about 7'-9".
Door rectangle area is about 8'-4" wide.
Front at door to rear is about 12'-10"
Bottom struts are 10 ft (120")
Board Quantities needed:
Main Dome: 10 ft boards - 15
8 ft boards - 10
Subdivision ("X1") struts: 5 are made from 8 ft boards, 5 from 10 ft,
and another 5 from 10 ft or 104" (another standard length available in
framing lumber).
Does not account for the door area.
Door rough-in frame shows a 36" x 80" opening. The door area is large
enough for a double sliding door, single door with room for extra
windows, or a custom made door. It is large enough for a small vehicle
such as a lawn mower, tractor, etc
The top is an ideal size for using 4' x 8' sheets to make cover panels.
It will make a very strong and sturdy frame. Use the X1 struts for
added strength and support for cover materials. Add FI (Face
Intermediate) boards for additional cover support.
