Green Corn Project
Who Are We?
The Green Corn Project is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that
builds organic food gardens at the homes of Austin residents with
financial or physical barriers. Our goal is to provide people
and
communities with the education and other resources needed to develop
natural and sustainable food-growing skills, including composting,
soil-building, plant propagation and seed saving.
In the garden, young and old family members learn skills, come to
understand natural cycles and gain gratification from their
accomplishments. They look forward to getting outdoors, putting their
hands in the soil and being literally "in touch" with the land. This
is a wealth that is shared with children, neighbors and communities.
What does the Green Corn Project provide for qualified applicants?
Home gardens give people direct access to nutritious, seasonal food
that is affordable and safe. Green Corn Project provides instruction
and materials necessary to establish a 50-100 square foot organic food
garden, according to family size.
· We teach how to deeply prepare existing soil using hand tools,
and
assist with labor
· We supply organic compost, seeds and seedlings and teach
close-spacing of plants
· We give ongoing support for 2-years, providing materials and
volunteers as needed
· We hold workshops to teach the most effective methods of growing
food
· We encourage participants to share their knowledge, skills,
and
excess harvest with others in their neighborhood and communities
How can people apply for GCP’s services?
People interested in starting a new garden or who would like
assistance with their existing garden can call us at 833-7446.
A
staff person will schedule a home visit to assess the site and the
condition of the soil. During the visit we will also gather valuable
information about special dietary needs and particular foods that each
family desires to grow.
How you can help.
We are interested in your ideas!
If you have information that would support the work we are doing, or
if you would like to volunteer or make a tax-deductible donation,
please contact us.
