Garden Dome 3
The larger sizes possible makes this dome excellent for a pool or hot tub cover, workshop, garage, cabin or spacious greenhouse. Lower height (less than half sphere) means with a greenhouse dome there is more efficient use of energy for heating in winter, less to cool in summer in warmer climates. For more height a Base Option can be added to make a dome with 5/8 fullness. Photo is the 20 foot 2 x 4 model. Only 60 eight ft boards were used to make the 120 struts for the 20 ft dome.
Most dome homes are of this type, a classic hexagon-pentagon design.
With a door extension attached to the 20 ft dome:
Five doors on the dome with Base Option:
Base Option: 15 Connectors and 45 struts are added to the Main Frame to give height and more useable interior space. Sections of struts may be taken out for the addition of floor extensions, standard doors, garage doors and windows or cupola.

This is also a 20 ft model in the beginning stages, painted with a tinted elastomeric coating and assembled in southeast Texas.

The Garden Dome 3 adapted for a roof top. Design would fit well over a brick, cement or wood frame wall. 10 struts now make up the base perimeter. The dome frame is 2 x 2 lumber with basic diameter of 12 ft.
Here the dome frame is shown with the bricks from the above image stacked in background. All these bricks were on the dome frame!
The “Main Frame” of the Garden Dome 3 complete. Over 1,100 lb. of cement brick blocks are set on the frame for a structural stress test. No apparent damage resulted.
Moved to a new location and Base Option added for approx 2-1/2 feet of extra height.
The hexagon and triangle right on top of it makes a nice door area with 8 struts and one hub removed. The dome is made from regular framing lumber, white pine 2 x 4s cut in half lengthwise with oil based wood preservative generously applied.
Garden Dome 3 Paper Model
To make your dome model begin by printing Page 2 on thick paper or card stock. Make 5 copies.Cut out the five groups of triangles along the perimeter edge lines. Next bend the interior lines slightly by placing on a straight edge and push down. Follow the placement of triangle sections to match edges and tape together on the inside of the dome. This gives the 3 frequency icosahedral dome, 5/8 sphere (actually 5 of 9 levels of triangles), diameter about 8 inches. Cut off the bottom row of triangles (on page two) to demonstrate the Garden Dome 3 w/o the Base Option.
